The seashore temples and Pallava monuments
of Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram) are found
58km south of Chennai. These Pallava works
share a strong resemblance to the Ellora
in the North. Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram)
was granted World Heritage Site status
by UNESCO in 1995. The Shore Temples and
the other structures are prominent examples
of Dravidian art and architecture. This
ancient port has lost its Temples to the
sea. Great efforts are being made by the
archaeological department to protect the
only stand-alone temple from getting submerged
by the crashing waves of the ocean. The
other prominent stone structures are the
Lighthouse, Mahishasuramardini Cave. Pancha
Pandava Rathas, Ganesh Ratha, Varaha cave,
The Krishna Mandapa and Arjuna Penance.
