Breathtaking views are in abundance on
a four hour long journey on the Nilgiri
Blue Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam
to Ooty the land of the Todas. This colonial
summer retreat of the Raj (John Sullivan
the collector of Coimbatore, bought the
land from the Todas for Rs.1 per acre)
is still a popular hill station for tourists
fleeing the scorching heat of the plains
in summer. The cool breeze laced with
the aroma of the flora and fauna, eye
captivating scenery of vast green plantations,
stretches of eucalyptus, pine and wattle
along the hill slopes is a feast to one's
senses.
The British well planned the gardens,
walk trails, and bungalows; meticulously
created Ooty to become an exceptionally
beautiful hill retreat. Wenlock Downs,
The Ootacmund Derby, Charing Cross, Botanical
Gardens, St. Stephen Church, Spencer's
store, Civil Court and Club all have a
touch of bygone British Raj Era. The Mysore
royal family's summer residence, Fernill
Palace is today a luxury heritage hotel.
Excursions include Mudumalai Wildlife
Sanctuary, Kargudi, Theppakkadu and its
Elephant camp show. Dodabetta, Elk Hill,
Green Valley View and Snowden Peak offer
the best view of the mountain range.
The Summer Festival is held annually during
the month of May in the Botanical Garden.
