Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu – Spiritual tourism destination

Rameshwaram is a sacred island most visited by Hindu's from all over the world. This is the site where Rama bathed and started to build the bridge ( with the help of Hunuman) to Lanka to rescue his wife Sita (who was captured by Lanka's king Ravana). The Ramalingeshwara Temple complex, Gandhamadana Parvatam the sacred enclave of Shri Rama's footprints, Nambunayagi Amman Kali Temple, Danushkodi and Ujain Mahamariamman Shore Temple are a must visit. The Cholas built the Ramalingeshwara Temple in the 12th century. It is customary for the Hindus to take a holy dip in each of the 22 tirthas (temple tanks) and in the sea before entering the temple. The temple festivals are Mahashivaratri and Thirukalyama.
