Tiruchirapllai or Trichy as it is fondly
called is on the plains between Shevaroy
and Palani Hills. The city was ruled by
the Pallavas, Pandyas and later by the
Cholas. The city has a good number of
temples to its pride, namely, The Rock
Fort Pillayar Temple of Uchchi Pillayar
(Elephant God Ganesh) is situated at the
heart of Trichy City. Sri Jambukeshwara
Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva was built
by the Nayaks. Srirangam Ranganathasamy
Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Sri Ranganathar
and his wife Goddess Ranganayaki. This
temple is locally referred as Boologa
Vaikuntam. The gopuram of Srirangam is
the World's tallest temple tower, standing
to a height of 236 feet. Some of the important
sites within the temple are Garuda Mandapam
and Sheshagiriraya Mandapam. The temple
festival of Vaikuntha Ekadasi Festival
is celebrated in a grand scale. |
